Options in a Latte Machine
A
latte machine is usually part of an espresso machine or a separate hand held device that creates froth or foam for coffee drinks. There are many different types of
latte machines. Depending on your needs one type may work best for you. It is important to find out the features so you can choose the right one.
What is a Latte?
A latte is
a coffee drink that uses steamed milk and has a thick foam on top. The foam can be light and think or thick and abundant. It is a matter of choice. Typically, dry lattes have a lot of foam and a small amount of steamed milk and wet lattes have more milk and less foam.
Lattes are not the only drink with foam on top, though. Foam can be added to cappuccinos, mochas and hot chocolate. You can add foam to almost any drink you want. It can add some texture and character to a drink.
Types of Latte Frothers
A
latte machine can come attached to an espresso machine. This type of latte frother will be a wand that simple sticks out of the espresso machine. You control it by a dial. Hot steam comes out of the wand to froth the milk.
A simpler frother is a hand held frother. These are a separate unit that allows you more control. It may be
battery operated or plug in. Some have a built in pitcher while some are just simple wands.
No matter what type of latte machine you use there will be a learning curve. It can take time to learn exactly how long to froth and how to move the pitcher to get the type of froth that you want.
A Look at Separate Units
Within the category of hand held frothers there are many options. Here is a look at
specific types you may find:
- Stove top: Steam is created through heating the frother. It is then inserted into the milk to create froth. This unit can produce inconsistent results and can take a while to perfect.
- Wand: Simple design, involves putting the end of the frother into the cup to create the froth. Does not heat the milk, but simple to use.
- Pitcher: Does not use steam, heats and whips milk to create foam.
There are more and more options coming on the market. You might find one that suits you better. It can be a process of simply trying them out to see which you like the best. You should consider all the features before making a final decision. This will help to ensure that you get the latte machine that is
the best for you.
