There are many different types of coffee makers, but in today’s modern society, the electric coffee maker is usually the coffee maker of choice. Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the United States.

History of Brewing Coffee

Brewing coffee is pretty simple. All it involves is coffee beans and hot water. In the earlier times, coffee was brewed by putting coffee grounds in a pot of boiling water. Then came inventions that made it easier to get the brewed coffee out so there were no grounds in the finished cup of coffee.

Along the way, the French press and the drip brewing system were invented. Both ideas are still used today. Brewing coffee really is a simple process that has not changed much from the time it was first discovered that crushed, roasted coffee beans steeped in hot water tasted so darn good.

First Electric Coffee Makers

The first electric coffee makers were developed using the idea of James Nason from Massachusetts who invented the first percolator. Once electricity was brought to homes, brewing coffee became simple. Early electric coffee makers were designed with safety features in the heating elements to ensure they were safe to use in the average home.

They became quite popular. Today it would be safe to say that the majority of homes in the United States has an electric coffee maker.

How Electric Coffee Makers Work

An electric coffee maker actually has a simple operation. There are three parts to the basic electric coffee maker. These are:

The coffee pot or carafe
The filter basket
The heating element and housing

The coffee pot or carafe is usually made of glass, but many modern designs use stainless steel. The filter basket is usually plastic, but can also be metal. Some coffee makers have a reusable filter that comes in the basket. The heating element and housing can vary greatly between coffee maker models, but the general function is the same.

To operate electric coffee makers you pour water into the back on the housing. There will be a reservoir for holding the water. You then ensure the coffee grounds are in the filter basket and the coffee pot is in its proper location. You plug in the coffee maker and turn it on.

More advanced models may require you to adjust settings, but a simple electric coffee maker will just have an on/off switch. Once you start the coffee maker, it will heat the water and send it through the basket where it will steep the coffee and then drip into the pot.

No matter how may advances in technology are made the process of making coffee is still kept simple. You can get almost any flavor or any type of brew you want today at home with the various types of electric coffee makers ion the market. There is something for everyone in coffee makers today.
